  • I wanted to respond to a comment from Camille regarding what appears to have been an unfortunate personal experience at Redeemer's parochial school. While I cannot comment on the case noted, I do want to make a comment about Redeemer generally and its courageous record historically on issues of race because the comment suggests the reverse of this. I attended Redeemer with my family in the 1950s and 1960s. The church was probably the first in Columbus to welcome African American members at a time when it was not popular to do so. Despite threats, it never wavered in its decision and I don't recall a single person opposing this stand. As I recall one person saying at the time: "A Lutheran Christian is a Lutheran Christian and there is nothing more to consider on membership." The church's women's group had African American participation, as I can verify because my mother was often a host to such events. Redeemer's record conforms with the generally good record of Lutheranism in the US and worldwide on issues of race. I attended a Lutheran residential high school and African American students were not only welcomed but considered intimate members of the community of students. I don't recall a single racist incident. Some of the students there actively participated then and later in efforts to remove prejudice. Lutheranism in the US and internationally has a proud record opposing the many forms of discrimination that exists. Redeemer's record on this should be noted if anyone prepares a history of a church established in 1940 as the first Lutheran church in Columbus Georgia.

I went to this school from 1887 to mid 1990, and I had the most horrible experience of my academic life in this school. Being the only black person, I was often the victim of racist attitudes and jokes... oh how Christian. The students would act with disgust if I accidently touched something of there's, and would often make me the outsider. Likewise, the teachers often acted in a ill manner way towards me. One teacher threatened to smack me across the face, and another teach threw my bookbag in the trash can simply because he thought it was in the way. The final straw for me and my family was that I was not allowed to go the the spelling bee, even though I was ranked at a higher level in spelling than my peers. Though this school preaches a Christian message, it is a racist school that through there actions teaches a racial superiority in favor of the white students.
